How to Remove Followers on Twitter (X) Without Blocking

By the Twitxdown Team Updated June 25, 2026 4 min read

Sometimes you want someone to stop following you without the drama β€” and without them getting a notification. Twitter, now X, lets you do exactly that. There are two dependable methods: the built-in Remove this follower option and the old-school soft block. Here's how each works and when to use it.

Method 1: "Remove this follower" (on the web)

This is the cleanest option, and it sends no notification:

  1. Open your profile and click Followers.
  2. Find the follower you want to remove.
  3. Click the three-dot (more) menu next to their name.
  4. Select Remove this follower and confirm.

On your phone? This option is part of the X website, not the native app. Just open x.com in your mobile browser and follow the same steps β€” or use the soft block below.

Method 2: Soft block (works in the app)

A soft block is a block followed instantly by an unblock. It removes the follow relationship without leaving them blocked:

  1. Go to the follower's profile.
  2. Open the more (three-dot) menu and tap Block, then confirm.
  3. Open the menu again and tap Unblock, then confirm.

They're no longer following you and no longer blocked. No notification is sent for either step.

What happens after you remove a follower

Your posts stop appearing in their home timeline, and they aren't alerted. If your account is public, though, they can still visit your profile and even follow again later. To prevent that, make your account private so every new follow needs your approval.

Remove, soft block, or block?

Action Notifies them? Can they refollow? Best for
Remove follower No Yes (if public) Quiet cleanup
Soft block No Yes (if public) Same, but from the app
Block They can tell if they check No (while blocked) Harassment / hard stop

Frequently asked questions

Does someone get notified when I remove them as a follower?

No. Removing a follower β€” or soft-blocking β€” is silent. The person isn't told, and it simply stops them from following you.

Can a removed follower just follow me again?

Yes, if your account is public. To require your approval before anyone can follow, switch your account to private (Protect your posts).

Why can't I find 'Remove this follower' in the X app?

That option currently lives on the X website, not the native mobile app. Open x.com in a phone or desktop browser to use it, or use the soft-block method in the app.

What is a soft block?

You block the person, then immediately unblock them. Blocking drops them as a follower; unblocking means they're no longer blocked. The net effect is a quiet removal.

Does removing a follower delete their past replies or mentions?

No. It only ends the follow relationship. Anything they already posted, replied, or mentioned stays unless you delete or hide it separately.
