How to Quote a Tweet (Quote Post) on X
Quoting lets you share someone else's post and add your own take on top. Twitter — now X — officially calls it a quote post (you may still hear "quote tweet" or "retweet with comment"). It's one of the most useful tools on the platform for joining a conversation, and it takes two taps. Here's how.
Repost vs. quote: what's the difference?
Both start from the same button, but they do different things. A plain repost shares a post to your followers exactly as it is. A quote wraps that post inside a new one where you add your own comment, image, GIF, or video. If you have something to say, quote it; if you just want to amplify it, repost it.
How to quote a post on desktop
- Find the post you want to quote.
- Click the Repost icon (the two arrows forming a square) below it.
- Choose Quote from the menu.
- Type your comment — you can also add a photo, GIF, or emoji.
- Click Post.
How to quote a post on iPhone or Android
- Tap the Repost icon under the post.
- Tap Quote.
- Add your comment (and media if you like).
- Tap Post.
Shortcut: quote by pasting a link
Open any post, copy its link (Share → Copy link), then paste that URL into a new post or a reply. X automatically embeds it as a quote — handy for quoting inside a reply or referencing more than one post.
How to see who quoted your post
Tap the Repost icon on your own post (or the three-dot menu), open View post engagements, and select the Quotes tab. You'll see everyone who quoted it — a great way to find conversations worth replying to.
Tips for quoting well
- Add real value — a fresh angle, a tip, or context — rather than a bare "This."
- Keep it kind; quote posts are public and travel far. Avoid pile-ons.
- Replies to your quote don't automatically notify the original author — @mention them if you want them included.
- For brands, quoting relevant posts is a low-effort way to join conversations and show personality.
Frequently asked questions
What is a quote post on X?
A quote post (formerly a 'quote tweet' or 'retweet with comment') reposts someone else's post with your own text added on top. Your followers see your commentary with the original post embedded below it.
What's the difference between a repost and a quote?
A repost shares the original post as-is with no comment. A quote adds your own words, image, GIF, or video above the embedded post — use it when you have something to say.
Can I quote a post inside a reply?
Yes. Start your reply, paste the link (URL) of the post you want to quote, and X automatically embeds it as a quote inside your reply.
How do I see who quoted my post?
Tap the repost icon on your post (or the three-dot menu) and open View post engagements, then the Quotes tab to see everyone who quoted it.
Can I quote a private (protected) post?
No. Posts from protected accounts can't be quoted to a public audience, since that would expose content the author chose to keep private.
